It’s Not Stress… It’s Your Nervous System

Why Your Body Isn’t Broken
There was a time in my life when I thought being “on edge” was just part of my personality. They call it a Type A personality right? Maybe you know the feeling…
That low hum of tension in your chest.
The inability to fully exhale.
The mind that won’t sit down and be quiet, even when your body is begging for rest.
Busy. Capable. Holding it all together.
Until one day… my body was giving signs of adrenal burn-out., my fatigue and unwellness were off the charts. And that’s when I began to truly understand the quiet, powerful role of something most people have never even heard of:
The vagus nerve.
So… What Is the Vagus Nerve?
Think of the vagus nerve as your body’s internal safety switch. It’s the main communication highway between your brain and your body — running from your brainstem down through your heart, lungs, and digestive system.
Its job?
To help you shift out of survival mode (fight, flight, freeze)and into rest, repair, and calm.
When your vagus nerve is functioning well, you feel:
Grounded
Present
Able to respond instead of react
Emotionally steady
Physically at ease
When it’s not… well, that’s when life can feel like a constant uphill battle.
The Modern Nervous System Dilemma
Here’s the truth most of us are living: Our nervous systems were designed for short bursts of stress…not constant background pressure.
But life today?
Notifications.
Responsibilities.
Emotional load.
Past experiences that were never fully processed.
It all adds up.
And over time, the vagus nerve becomes less responsive—like a muscle that hasn’t been used properly. Instead of easily returning to calm, the body stays stuck in:
Anxiety
Overwhelm
Fatigue
Hyper-alertness
Or even shutdown
And here’s the kicker…
You can’t think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. You have to feel your way back.

Bowen Therapy: The Gentle Reset
This is where I fell in love with Bowen Therapy. Not because it’s dramatic, not because it forces change, but because it listens. Bowen works through gentle rolling movements over muscles and connective tissue, followed by intentional pauses.
And those pauses? That’s where the magic happens. They give your nervous system a moment to go: "Oh… we’re safe here." And when the body feels safe…the vagus nerve begins to activate.
What Happens When the Vagus Nerve Switches On?
It’s subtle at first. A deeper breath. A softening in the belly. A quieting of the mind.
Then, over time:
Sleep improves
Digestion settles
Emotions feel less overwhelming
Pain begins to ease
You respond to life instead of bracing against it
I’ve seen clients come in holding years of tension…and leave looking like they’ve just returned from a holiday they didn’t realise they needed.
Why One Session Feels Good… But Consistency Changes Everything
Here’s something I’ve noticed over the years in clinic: A single Bowen session can create relief, but a consistent rhythm of care creates change.
When you receive Bowen every two weeks, something deeper begins to happen, you’re not just calming the nervous system temporarily… You’re training it.
You’re teaching your body:
Safety is not a one-off experience
Calm is something you can return to
You don’t have to live in survival mode
It’s like gently reprogramming the baseline your body operates from, over time, your vagus nerve becomes more responsive—more resilient.
A Little Story From My Practice
I once had a woman come to me who described herself as “permanently wired.”
She couldn’t sit still, struggled with sleep, and felt like her body was always waiting for something to go wrong.
After her first session, she said, "That’s the first time I’ve felt my shoulders drop in years." But the real shift didn’t happen that day. it happened over the next couple of months, participating in fortnightly appointments.
At the fourth appointment she walked in and said, "Something’s different. I don’t react the same way anymore. I pause." That pause? That’s the vagus nerve doing its job.
The Bigger Picture: This Isn’t Just Relaxation
This is about regulation. It’s about creating a body that:
Feels safe to rest
Has capacity for joy
Can process emotions without overwhelm
Isn’t constantly bracing for impact
And in a world that often pulls us out of ourselves, this is powerful work.

Your Results
Mostly A’s: Your vagus nerve is likely functioning well—keep supporting it with regular rest and body-based practices.
Mostly B’s: Your nervous system is working hard. With consistent support (like Bowen), you could shift into a much calmer baseline.
Mostly C’s: Your body may be stuck in survival mode. This isn’t a failure—it’s a signal. And it’s something that can absolutely be supported and shifted.
Coming Back to Yourself
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Your body is not working against you. It’s working for you… based on what it has experienced. Sometimes, it just needs a little help remembering how to feel safe again.
That’s what Bowen offers.
A pause.
A reset.
A quiet invitation back into your body.
And when you honour that regularly—every two weeks, gently and consistently…You’re not just having a treatment, you’re changing your relationship with your nervous system.
And that, over time, changes everything.
if you would like to put Bowen therapy to the test to see what it can do for your nervous system, and you live within an acceptable distance of either Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast or Cedar Pocket just outside of Gympie....
Let me know if you need availability outside of what is listed on my booking page and also which location will work best for you. For maximum effect on the nervous system, you should expect to have fortnightly visits for at least 6 appointments.
